“Happiness and Well-being: Defining a New Economic Paradigm”

On 2 April 2012 the United Nation headquarters in New York hosted the meeting “Happiness and Well-being: Defining a New Economic Paradigm” which brought together representatives from governments, religious organisations, academia and civil society to discuss the issue of going beyond GDP to measure progress.

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon underlined the importance of recognising that social, economic and environmental dimensions are indivisible and they are intricately linked to happiness and well-being. A new economic paradigm that takes into account not only economic growth but environmental protection and social development is needed.

The meeting was closed with the hope to adopt by 2015 a sustainability-based economic paradigm, committed to promoting true human well-being and happiness, and ensuring at the same time, the survival of all species of the planet, as Bhutan’s Prime Minister Jigme Thinley said.
